Christmas lights
Even though Japan doesn't observe Christmas the same way we do in the states, they still like their Winter illuminations. In our neighborhood, only our porch and our American neighbor's porch has Christmas lights--that isn't a Japanese thing. They do have specific areas in town (streets lined with trees or parks) where they like to light everything up. We all bundled up after dinner one night and walked to Roppongi and Midtown (about a twenty minute walk) so the kids could see the lights. The boys were just there to appease me but the girls, of course, thought it was all magical. A week later Mike and I walked down to Omotosando (a twenty minute walk in the other direction) to the fashion district where there was another winter illumination. In the states we usually tried to go on a drive to see lights (though, once the boys started getting older, they cared less and some years chose to stay home while we'd take the girls). I appreciate that we can still enjoy Christmas lights here even if it is different than driving through neighborhoods to see all the houses decked out.
