Monkey Island and Glass Beach
In June we drove to Yokosuka where Steve and Carol live (they are military relations missionaries assigned to the Naval base there) and spent the day playing with them. We arrived in time to catch the ferry to Monkey Island but the main gate where we needed to park the van was closed so we had to drive to the other side of the base and missed the boat by less than five minutes. We decided to get tickets to tour an old Japanese naval ship while we waited for the ferry to come back, which was really interesting. The ferry was only about a fifteen minute boat ride to the Island. The website said there was a beach we could swim at but when got there we saw that they had closed the beach because of Covid (we are never getting away from Covid here!). We left Grandma, Eli, and Felicity sitting on benches in shade with water while the rest of us went on a small hike around the island. Monkey Island is an old military battery. After our hike we took the ferry back and went to lunch. Felicity chose the second largest hamburger on the menu and needed help from three of us to finish it. After lunch we drove to Glass Beach and changed into swimming suits. The beach was kind of a disappointment with lots of jelly fish and the water was kind of dirty but we did find some sea glass, which was really fun. We stayed until the sun started to set and then gave hugs and promises to see each other again soon, then drove back to Tokyo. It was a hot, sweaty, fun day to spend with Steve and Carol.
