My own personal decorating consultant

Since the last post I've talked to my sister who gave me some great ideas for improving some of the spaces in my home. So, I'm posting more so she can give me even more ideas. I am thinking of having a piano bench made by our friend who bought all of Mike's tools. The piano was FREE! Isn't that amazing? Who just gives a piano away? Mike rescued it from his home teaching family that was leaving it out in the rain. He got it just before the rain started.
Also, this black bookcase area is a problem for me. I'm not sure how to fix that. The picture of the kitchen was taken a year ago and it looks the same now, only cleaner. I do have a red rug on the ground by the sink and that doesn't work--red and blue? The main thing I'm wondering about it is what do I do with the bird house? I saw it at a garage sale and painted it blue to match the curtains in the kitchen but now I don't know what else to do with it. It's been sitting there for a year. So, give me ideas. I'd be happy with any idea for any of the spaces pictured.

Buy some moss from the craft store and make a nest. Then put a little birdy (also found at Hobby Lobby) in it. You could also put a little potted ivy plant inside it (as seen here: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2EQykTfgCbg/SNEFiUhV1iI/AAAAAAAAAOc/O0rMENY-nxg/s320/decorbirdcage.jpg). The possiblities are endless....! Have fun!
Ooh, I like that picture, Chels. I would have to take out the little hanging thing inside if I did that but I like that!

That is a cute birdcage! Our piano bench was pretty rickety when we got it and after a few years it had to go! We just used a kitchen chair for a long time. Last year I took the back off of one our our old kitchen chairs, bought a 6 inch cushion for it to make it tall enough and covered in in fabric I liked. It's not as great as a bench, but it's really cute! -Jen

I certainly can't help you. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with all our space. I teach this one lady piano lessons and in return I'm making her help me decorate my house. She's super good at it and can do it on a really cheap budget. I wish you were here to go to all the awesome flea markets they have.

Above your cabinets I think it would look nice to have some plates or vases or something in the colors that are in your kitchen. I think that would help it not look as stark. I think you could try craig's list or something like it for a piano bench. You might fund one that way. The black bookcase isn't bad, but I could see how you would want to do something with it. It may be something as simple as moving it to another spot where it is more balanced in the room. ~ Angela Orme
Oh dear, I wouldn't know what to say. Decorating is not a strong point of mine.

Half the time I don't know what I want until I see it!

Some did tell me once that whenever you see something you LOVE but have no place for it, you should get it anyway, because you'll always end up decorating around that one thing that you love.

Good luck!
