School for Felicity

April was a busy month for Felicity at school.  Her school is wonderful.  Her classroom is very kid-driven.  The teachers pick up on what the interests of the kids are and then they build their learning around that.  It's been really cool to see how the kids have grown through exploring their talents and interests.  One kid decided they wanted to grow plants and soon, all the kids wanted to grow plants so the teachers bought soil and seed and the kids grew sprouts and kept a daily plant journal.  After going on a field trip to watch a play by the middle school kids, the class decided that they all wanted to become actors so the teachers wrote a play and the kids chose parts and made backdrops and created homemade tickets to hand out to the parents.  They also made their own costumes and then invited all the parents to come and see their play.  Felicity was one of the three little piggies and she was also Piggie from Piggie and Gerald.  A few boys in the class were really interested in chess so they began a chess tournament and soon enough, all the kids were coming up with their own tournaments.  Felicity created an ice challenge where anyone who wants to compete gets to put their hands in frozen bowls of ice water and see who can keep their hands in the longest....???  I assume the teachers will oversee the competition and no frostbite will occur.  Hahaha.  They have big tournament bracket posters hanging up in the hallway outside their classroom.

In April the school also had a petting zoo set up on the playground.  I think it was a favorite of everyone, including the parents.  The kids were all given carrots and cabbage to feed the animals and got to pet and hold everything.

Finally, they had a book parade to end their literacy week.  All the kids got to dress up as their favorite book character and then paraded outside for the parents.  Felicity wanted to be the girl from the Rough Faced Girl.  It's an Indian fable, kind of a cross between Cinderella and Johnny Lingo.

Felicity is really dreading school ending in two weeks.  She loves school so much and is worried about moving to the main campus.  The first grade teachers from the main campus have made the trip into the city this past week to visit each kindergarten class and even met with each kindergartener separately to ask them questions and get to know them.  I think that will help Felicity so much next year knowing that whichever teacher she gets she has already met them once.  My days of walking her to and from school are coming to an end and I admit, I am going to miss it so much.  Not only does it force me to get outside everyday (rain or shine) but I really enjoy that time with Felicity.  She talks my ear off and it's such a special time for me to spend with her.  I'm enjoying all the Felicity time I have left before she begins to hop on the bus each day with her siblings.
